Die Arbeitsjacke entstand um das 19. Jahrhundert in Frankreich und wurde schnell zum meistgenutzten Kleidungsstück für Berufstätige aller Art.


Die typische blaue Farbe wurde von französischen Textilherstellern verwendet, um Risse und Flecken zu verbergen, und sie wurde allgemein von Landwirten, Handwerkern, Automobilarbeitern und Eisenbahnern getragen. Schwarz war die bevorzugte Wahl der Tischler.

Eines der Merkmale, das die „bleu de travail“ auszeichnet, ist bei einigen Modellen zweifellos der typische HBT-Baumwollstoff.


Arbeitsjacken kamen dann in den 50er Jahren wieder in Mode und entwickelten sich zu ikonischen Stücken in der Welt der Vintage-Kleidung.
