Nel XIX secolo, la giacca da lavoro fu introdotta in Francia, diventando presto l'abbigliamento preferito per molte professioni. Il colore blu, adottato dai tessitori francesi, era perfetto per nascondere strappi e macchie, ed era comunemente indossato da agricoltori, artigiani, lavoratori del settore automobilistico e ferrovieri. I falegnami, invece, optavano per il nero.

Una caratteristica distintiva di alcune giacche bleu de travail è il cotone hbt. Ritornate in auge negli anni '50, queste giacche sono diventate icone del mondo dell'abbigliamento vintage.
