The L2B bomber was born in the 1950s as part of the US Air Force equipment, designed for pilots operating in milder climates.

It was a lightweight variant of the earlier L2A model and was designed to offer protection from wind and rain without being too warm. The L2B was initially produced in a distinctive steel blue colour, but in the 1960s it was changed to sage green to better suit the camouflage requirements of military operations.

Like the more well-known MA-1, the L2B featured a bright orange lining, designed to make pilots easily visible in an emergency. The jacket's design was functional and practical: the collar, cuffs and waist were elasticated to retain heat, while the distinctive left sleeve pocket, known as the utility pocket, provided storage for small tools.

With a short fit and no padding, the L2B was ideal for cockpits and temperatures between 10°C and 25°C.
