La giacca da lavoro nasce in Francia nel XIX secolo e diventa rapidamente l'indumento più diffuso tra molte professioni. Il tipico colore blu, utilizzato dai tessitori francesi, mascherava strappi e macchie, rendendolo ideale per agricoltori, artigiani, operai automobilistici e ferrovieri. I falegnami, invece, preferivano il nero.
Un aspetto caratteristico di alcune bleu de travail è l'uso del cotone hbt.


Negli anni '50, queste giacche tornarono in voga, diventando pezzi iconici nel mondo dell'abbigliamento vintage.
