Il Pea Coat, uno dei capi più iconici della Marina degli Stati Uniti, ha una storia che affonda le sue radici nel XVIII secolo. Originariamente indossato dai marinai olandesi, il termine "Pea Coat" deriva dalla parola olandese "pijjakker", dove "pij" indica un tessuto di lana grezza e "jakker" significa giacca. Questa giacca venne adottata dalla Royal Navy britannica nel XIX secolo per i sottufficiali, apprezzata per la sua robustezza e funzionalità.

Agli inizi del XX secolo, il Pea Coat venne integrato nell'uniforme della US Navy. Disegnato per affrontare le dure condizioni marine, il cappotto era realizzato in tessuto Melton, una lana pesante che offriva un'eccellente protezione dal freddo e dal vento. La sua lunghezza corta consentiva ai marinai di muoversi agilmente durante le manovre sulle navi, mentre il doppiopetto con grandi bottoni, spesso decorati con simboli nautici, garantiva una chiusura sicura.
