La giacca da lavoro ha origine in Francia nel XIX secolo, diventando rapidamente l'indumento più popolare per varie professioni. Il tipico colore blu, utilizzato dai tessitori francesi, serviva a mascherare strappi e macchie, rendendolo ideale per agricoltori, artigiani, lavoratori automobilistici e ferrovieri. I falegnami, invece, preferivano il nero.

Un tratto distintivo di alcune bleu de travail è l'uso del cotone hbt.

Negli anni '50, queste giacche tornarono di moda, diventando pezzi iconici nel mondo dell'abbigliamento vintage.
