The work jacket was born in France in the 19th century and quickly became the most popular garment among professionals in various sectors.
The distinctive blue color was chosen by French weavers to camouflage tears and stains, and was commonly worn by farmers, artisans, automobile workers, and railroad workers. Carpenters, on the other hand, preferred black.
One of the distinctive elements of the bleu de travail is the typical hbt (herringbone twill) cotton weave, present in some garments.
Work jackets came back into fashion in the 1950s, becoming iconic pieces in the world of vintage fashion.
